Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, August 26, 2002 (translated from German) Safer surfing Not long ago the mostly unexpected confession "I love you", written by a student in Australia, caused a damage of about 8 billion dollars, says Ramona Wonneberger, CEO of the Nutzwerk GmbH in Leipzig, about the omnipresent danger from the internet. And still, she continued, only about five percent of the users are using anti-virus programs. A reliable protection against viruses, unwanted dialers and a lot of other data rubbish is offered by Wonneberger's company in the form of a real-time data filter service "SaferSurf" (www.safersurf.com). The filter identifies these menaces and eliminates them in a special cleaning box before they can reach the user computer. SaferSurf is a bit like "the invention of the lightning conductor in modern times", says Wonneberger. Users who subscribe to the service do not have to be afraid that their PC might be struck by lightning, destroying all data. The patented data filter that was invented by Wonneberger's co-CEO René Holzer catches computer viruses and eliminates them without interrupting the internet connection. The viruses are identified by the scanner that is updated every five minutes. It also recognizes auto-installing dialers that can cause high costs by dialling premium-rate phone numbers. The system does not simply filter out the programs but lets the user decide whether or not he wants to install the dialer. It is also possible to release or block certain web addresses with the Nutzwerk service. The fees for private users are between 0.50 to 3.50 euros per month. The company names currently about 2000 customers and 6000 users of the SaferSurf service. |
