Internet in-a-box
Test of the allround server

By Alfred Porschmann
Nutzwerk has introduced an allround web server – the rack server Internet in-a-box. The server can connect up to 253 clients with the internet per Modem, ISDN or ADSL. The device can also be used as gateway server. In addition it has an integrated firewall. The server in the 19 inch cabinet comes with a 766 MHz Celeron processor, 128 MB RAM and 10 GB hard disk. PC Professionell tested the ISDN version with a second LAN card for the DSL connection.

In order to implement such a system manually, network administrators usually need a lot of time. Internet in-a-box is pre-configured to enable even users with little network knowledge to finish the basic configuration within 10 to 20 minutes. The supplied manual is a good help. Five providers with internet by call access have been pre-configured, reducing the installation to the setup of a separate modem or the integrated ISDN card.

Individual Rights
After the basic configuration the system can be adjusted to the individual requirements. The administrator can assign individual rights. For example, one user can get write access for the central address management, whereas other users may only read it.
Internet in-a-box can also be used as flexible POP3 and SMTP server. An e-mail filter eliminates unwanted mails and copies important mails for further users. Outgoing mail can either be sent via adjustable smart hosts or directly. Web pages can be cached for faster access. E-mails can be dealt with locally or externally.

One drawback: The DHCP server could not be activated during the test and the simple address management is too undemanding for the integrated database MySQL.

The user can set up the system within a few hours even with little LAN knowledge. Internet in-a-box costs 1740 Euros.
