New dialer evades security settings

Munich (smk) – The technology development company Nutzwerk in Leipzig, provider of the real-time data filter "SaferSurf" warns against a new kind of automatic dialers. Unlike common dialers these new auto dialers work without ActiveX technology and can therefore evade the Internet Explorer security settings. If a prepared web page is visited, a small file the size of five kilobytes is downloaded on the computer. According to Nutzwerk the user does not even notice it. The downloaded file then installs the actual dialer, which mainly consists of a DLL library.

However, Nutzwerk's CEO René Holzer does not state in his report how this installation file is executed. Experts claim that is has to be started manually by the user. Once the DLL is loaded, it can use any web page to establish an expensive phone connection on the computer. The unwanted software installation can be recognized by the entry "minidialer" in the dial-up settings of Windows.
